Welcome! My name is Yuka and I'm an architect.
Besides all the awesome opportunities I am granted with at my job, I also have access to items from people's households that they no longer hold onto, which I can then turn into the perfect work material for my project.
はじめまして。私は建築士をしながら、クリエイティブディレクターとして活動し始めました。また、空き家に関わることをメインに仕事をしています。空き家には、たくさんの日本の歴史を感じられるもの達が眠っています。
I believe that every thing and every being can have a valuable place in today's society.
私は、その中から現代でも通じる価値あるものを救い、リユース、リサイクル、リメイクすることにより生まれ変わらせ、世の中に循環させています。
Therefore, my starting point is to reinforce worth into the Japanese Traditional Clothing: The Kimono.
日本人として和の心を救いたい気持ちから、まず古い着物の価値を高めることから始めるために、このプロジェクトを始めました。

Project background
プロジェクトの経緯
My job as an architect is to bring back to life abandoned homes. The process of reviving empty houses implies getting rid of what the tenants have left behind. I have managed many empty houses so far, and as I was filtering through the forgotten things, I noticed that many people left their old Kimonos and never came back after them.
For some reason, I couldn't bring myself to throw them away. It meant that I had to throw away a part of my culture and tradition. I didn't have the heart to do that.
I believe that every single thing has its own value.
So, instead of putting an end to their existence, I decided to transform them and give them a new meaning into the world. This was the beginning of a new step in my life.
私は建築士という職業を通して、空き家をまた人が集う為の建物に蘇らせています。これまで多くの空き家に触れてきましたが、片付けの時に出てきた使われる用途のない着物の数はとても多いです。
それと同時に、私の手の届かない着物が廃棄される現状を見てきました。
それは日本人が自ら日本の伝統文化を否定し、日本人の心を捨てている感覚を抱きました。
私は、人が生み出すものには、それぞれの役割や存在そのものに価値があると信じています。
この世の中から見捨てられた着物に、新たな形で価値を見出せるのではないだろうか。その想いから、私はこの問題の解決のために走り出しました。

My encounter with Germany
ドイツとの出会い
One turning point came no longer after I started experimenting with the Kimono. One pair of bottoms that were made of the Kimono I kept was purchased by a person from Germany on Ebay.
Even if it was only one person, that alone was enough to keep me motivated to continue with this project.
As luck would have it, one of my acquaintances introduced me to a market development seminar. I decided to participate and this is how I learned about the TrendSet exhibition in Germany.
I am a big fan of the German author Michael Ende, so I always hoped to visit Germany one day. This must be fate, I thought. And so, I decided to take part in the exhibition and go to Germany.
着物を救うために試行錯誤していた時、ひとつの転機が訪れます。着物生地を素材として作ったズボン（オシャモンペ）をeBayで販売したところ、一人のドイツ人が購入してくれたのです。
たった一人でしたが、それだけでも私にとっては十分にこの活動を続けるモチベーションになりました。
さらに幸運は重なり、知人の紹介で海外販路開拓事業と巡り合い、古着物素材を使ったリメイク作品にて展示会【TrendSet exhibition】に参加することになったのです。
また、私は幼い頃からミヒャエル・エンデというドイツの作家さんの大ファンです。いつかドイツに行きたいと願っていた私にとって、これは文字通り運命的な出来事でした。

私が願う未来の世界
The future world I wish for
From my experience so far, I have learned that even if something has lost it's meaning in Japan, it can thrive as a valuable thing somewhere else in the world.
To confirm my belief, I decided to go to this exhibition and see for myself if there are any chances of success. One of my ideas is to introduce the old Kimono fabric to different creators around the world and give them free will over transforming it into a new valuable item.
I hope that the work that blends Japanese and Western styles together will create a new diversity, and I hope that the success of this project will help the people around the world to notice the resources hidden behind trash and waste.
これまでの経験から、日本で見捨てられたものであっても、世界のどこかで価値を見出してくれる人がいることを私は知りました。
今回ドイツでの展示会では、実際に現地を訪れ、その可能性を肌で感じ、確かめたいと思っています。
使われていない着物にインスピレーションを感じたクリエイターさん達が使うことで、新たな価値が生まれる循環になればと考えてます。
和洋折衷の作品は多様性を生み出し、その成功が日本人や世界の人々の「ゴミは資源」という気持ちにつながる事を、私は願っています。
